New Build Family Garden

About This Project

A family garden needs something for everyone.  Relaxation zones for the adults and play areas for the children are essential. But it’s also important that the garden can adapt and change as the children grow.

For this new build property, Katie designed a family friendly outdoor living space that can be enjoyed all year round.

THE CLIENT BRIEF

This  west facing garden has a significant slope to it and is slightly overlooked by neighbours.  Typically for a new build garden it had no features in it whatsoever aside from a small patio and a boundary fence.

Our clients wanted to make the most of their outdoor space. Particularly the sunny corner in the back corner of the garden.  They wanted a patio for seating, dining and entertaining and were dreaming of a traditional layout with an English Country Garden feel.

It was also important to the family that the children would feel invited to use the garden all year round.

Site covenants meant that Katie’s proposed planting plan was a little restricted with regard to height. However Katie’s vast horticultural knowledge meant that this was no problem whatsoever.

THE FAMILY GARDEN DESIGN

Katie’s garden design for this new build garden brings an element adventure into the plot. There is a winding path leading though beautifully scented planting and past a bubbling water feature to a sunny seating area.

Closer to the house, the existing patio has been extended to create room for outdoor dining and entertaining. Whilst the generously proportioned side return has become home to a small allotment garden. Raised beds and a greenhouse will mean that the whole family can be engaged in growing their own food.

At the end of the garden, a “wilderness garden” has been created specifically for children’s play. This is surrounded by planting which also serves to soften and disguise the timber fencing.

For the adults, Katie has included a timber pergola which is beautifully lit for evening use.

The whole is consolidated by a natural lawn which is ideal for children of all ages to relax and play upon.

THE RESULTS: A NEW BUILD FAMILY GARDEN FOR ALL TO ENJOY

This family garden design has been built by Holland Landscapes of Colchester and looks even better in real life than it does on the plan.  As you can see from the photographs, the space is well used and enjoyed by all.
