Rear garden Stanford-Le-Hope

About This Project

This rear garden in Stanford Le Hope was a joy to design.  The clients absolutely wanted to make full use of their outdoor space and they weren’t afraid to be engaging with the garden in every possible way.

The client brief

We designed this modestly sized garden in Stanford Le Hope during lockdown. Our environmentally conscious clients had lots of ideas as to how they wanted to use the space. From growing their own food to drying the washing, relaxing outside to dining and entertaining, this garden design needed to tick a lot of boxes.

The one thing our clients didn’t want was a boring garden.

About the garden

The rear garden itself is broadly rectangular and reasonably level.  Katie from Tapestry Design Studios was presented with a realistic build budget and asked to inject interest and excitement into the space.  We think she’s achieved it beautifully.

Starting from the house,  double doors open out onto a porcelain patio with space for a 6-seater table and chairs.  To the left, is the kitchen door, meaning that food and drinks can easily be brought out into the dining area.  Just around the corner is the washing line and a handy water butt where runoff from the roof can be collected for use in the garden.

To the right of the garden, we’ve added a long border, full of cottage garden type planting. Following on, a pretty path runs alongside the border and leads to a second patio area.

The second patio is home to a practical storage shed, a greenhouse, compost bins and a utility area for storing tools. We’ve added privacy screens to separate this area from the pretty courtyard area in the centre of the space.

Katie designed the  courtyard garden  to sit at 45 degrees to the fence which makes the space feel wider. It also brings an extra layer of wow factor to the overall garden and offers fabulous views from the upstairs windows of the house.

Katie’s design for the courtyard area includes triangular shaped lawn and lots more cottage garden style planting. Additionally, there’s a relaxing seating area and some raised beds for vegetables. A focal point is created by  a circular stone water feature which will happily burble and gurgle all day long.

Landscaping this rear garden
