About This Project
This pretty back garden has been shortlisted for two design categories in the Association Of Professional Landscapers Awards for 2025. We’d like to thank our clients for allowing the APL judges to visit their private garden and for making this award nomination possible.
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
This beautifully maintained, pretty back garden in Great Bentley was about to welcome a new addition to its features. The homeowners needed to upgrade their workshop space from a chilly 8 x 6 garden shed to something larger and better insulated. In order to do so, the garden would need a bit of a makeover.
THE CLIENT BRIEF
The clients wanted a pretty garden that can be enjoyed from the comfort of their conservatory when the weather is inclement. They had seen images of a lawn comprising two interlocking circles of grass and were keen to recreate this feature in their own space.
A small pond in the garden needed to be removed for safety reasons. However, our clients wanted to hear moving water whilst relaxing on their patio. Katie had an excellent idea for an alternative water feature which everyone loved.
Their new workshop needed to be part of a cohesive design. Neither hidden from view, nor dominating the space.
THE CHALLENGES FOR THIS PRETTY BACK GARDEN
To be honest, with this garden our clients were so accommodating that there were relatively few challenges either with the design or the build of this space. The clients were very clear with their brief, yet also open to suggestions.
THE SOLUTION
Katie has designed a garden layout that offers everything our clients asked for. A generously sized workshop which is easily accessible from the patio. A well appointed seating area has a water feature incorporated into an inset planting bed.
Two interlocking circular lawns look amazing at ground level and even better when viewed from the upstairs windows. We love how Katie’s intuitive planting plan offers all year round interest.
The garden was built by Holland Landscapes and will hopefully be enjoyed by our clients for many years to come.

I was fortunate to find Katie’s details online and from our first conversation I felt very confident, Katie spent a considerable about of time with us listening to what we wanted to use our garden for! I had ideas but didn’t know how to put them together, Katie then produced our garden plan and it was just perfect. We then contacted Holland Landscapes who carried out the work to an extremely high level and once completed I then contacted Katie and she produced a planting plan, again so much care was taken to ensure we had the best of Katie’s expertise but also plants that we liked.
